For some bands, time seems to be a very flexible concept. Hero In Error already attracted attention in 2010 with their EP “The High Points Of New Lows”, which received a wider release the following year through Mediaskare. Due to line-up changes, the Irish took a break from 2013 to 2016, then returned with their new singer Kaan Tasan (Heart Of A Coward), presented “Obey” in 2017 and went into hiding once more. Now the quintet is finally back with its third EP, simply „Hero In Error“ titled, back, which serves up crisp hardcore and metalcore with a modern twist.
There are three pressing songs that were worth the wait. The harbinger “Enemy Within” begins ominously and initially leads you down a wrong, minimalist track. Leaden heaviness, subtle electronic influences and Tasan’s angry, powerful vocals form an unholy alliance that captures modern metalcore and a lot of heavyness. You look for clear singing in vain, instead you move forward with growing enthusiasm. Even the smaller breaks can’t affect the flow, they underline the uncomfortable dynamics and make the event appear highly threatening.
In comparison, “Moths To A Flame” begins almost melodically and anthemic, surprising with a graceful opening that one would expect from In Flames. Right off the bat, Hero In Error flips an imaginary switch and serves up brute force in the verses before the outrageously catchy chorus with sparsely used clear vocals hits the ear. With “Left In Your Absence” it ultimately comes to an end far too quickly, massive and rousing in equal parts. In a way, you seem to hear a mixture of the first two songs here, experimental, angry, but also with gripping melodies, before the best vocal part of the entire EP causes a stir at the climax.
Ultimately, it’s surprisingly simple: If you liked Hero In Error’s previous work, you’ll love the latest small format. But that doesn’t mean that the Irish are standing still. Although they remain true to their sound, there are small but fine fresh approaches that make the event really gripping, thrilling and intense. The play with metalcore structures, catchy expectations and furious anger succeeds on “Hero In Error” from the first to the last minute. Even if this appetizer is far too short, the quintet once once more reminds us of its class, and hopefully not for the last time.
