Netherlands, man who held people hostage in bar in Ede arrested

The man who took several people hostage in a bar in Ede, Holland, has been arrested. This was announced by De Telegraf, specifying that shortly before 12.30 a man, with his face covered by a balaclava, left the Petticoat bar with his hands raised. At this point the officers approached and handcuffed him. The mayor of the Dutch town then confirmed that the hostage-taking is over.

The man had entered the club around closing time with weapons and explosives and allegedly threatened to blow up the place. A musical evening had taken place in the bar, which ended at dawn on March 30th. The police received a report around six o’clock, followed by a massive turnout of police, firefighters and ambulances. Large screens have been installed around the restaurant. According to the Dutch media, it is likely that only the employees remained in the restaurant.

The arrested person was already known to the judiciary. Marthyne Kunst, chief prosecutor of the eastern Netherlands, said at a press conference. The alleged kidnapper has already been convicted in the past for threats. According to Kunst, who did not provide further information, the conviction dates back to last year. In general, nothing is yet known regarding the motive. The police do not believe that the incident in Ede has a terrorist motive, Anne Jan Oosterheert of the Eastern Netherlands Police said at the press conference.

Police said residents of evacuated homes near the crash site were being sheltered elsewhere. Previously, residents had been asked to stay indoors. Police also urged people to stay away from the center of Ede. “Stay at home and don’t come and watch,” the police wrote on X.
