Do you feel older than you really are? Your sleep may be the cause, according to two new researches.

Lack of sleep might cause someone to feel 5, or even 10 years, older than they are.

“Sleep plays a role [important] regarding how old people feel,” Leonie Balter, a sleep researcher at Stockholm University in Switzerland and lead author of both studies, told CNN.

Although health and mobility issues may also play a role, sleep is a key point, according to the two studies released Tuesday.

“Insufficient sleep causes you to feel sleepy. “Drowsiness is an important motivational state that makes us prioritize sleep and reduces our energy levels,” added Balter, adding that a lack of energy and motivation can make a person feel older. by limiting one’s ability to remain physically and socially active.

“Overall, these findings highlight the importance of adequate sleep in maintaining a young subjective age, which might benefit both mental and physical health,” wrote Dr. Chang-Ho Yun, professor in neurology at Seoul National University, in an email sent to the American media.

Two studies with similar results

While the first study, carried out with 429 adults aged 18 and 70, evaluated sleep at home in the preceding months, the second, carried out with 186 of these participants, evaluated two nights in a laboratory.

In both cases, participants who showed signs of sleep depravation felt older than they were.

“These results confirm that sleep, a vital biological phenomenon, might be the key to feeling young,” concluded Ms Balter.

For his part, Dr. Yun recalled the importance of consulting when a disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea is suspected.

“Remember, a good night’s sleep can help you live younger,” he said.
