New material from the extremely busy Greeks Acid Mammoth Father and son Babalis are always more than welcome. With their fourth album since their deal with Heavy Psych Sounds Records signed in autumn 2019, the stoner doom quartet once once more shows their productive side, without showing any signs of fatigue. „Supersonic Megafauna Collision“ is the first record written following the end of the lockdowns and shows a spirit of optimism and pure joy of playing.

Six songs in 42 minutes leave plenty of room for something expansive, which comes through especially in the big finale. “Tusko’s Last Trip” takes twelve minutes and turns out to be an oversized creative triumph that covers a pleasantly broad spectrum between leaden heaviness, fuzzy riffs and daring space rock. It feels like the action is constantly surging back and forth, accompanied by endless instrumental loops and the usual sweet vocals. Beguiling heaviness meets riff thunderstorms meets neck-snapping meets amazingly charming jam character – it can sometimes be so simple and yet so complex.

“Fuzzorgsam (Keep On Screaming)” is also likeable and dares to overdose on distortion, appearing earthy and thunderous at the same time. The much doomier approach is incredibly fun, and in the middle of it all, a pleasant, warm-hearted guitar solo breaks out of the thicket and takes you into new, unexpected, magical spheres. The pleasantly thick, oppressive “Atomic Shaman” also puts you in a good mood, clenches your fists and moves forward in a very metallic way. The stoner doom sound sharpens its roots in the dirt and indulges in booming madness – very earthy, raw and full of soul.

The sheer force of this undertaking alone puts you in a great mood. Acid Mammoth let themselves drift and the guitars take the lead. Thundering bulwarks, sweet riffs, fuzzy escapades and astonishingly spacey interludes testify to the regained enthusiasm of a band that was able to groove once more on stage and took this tailwind into the studio. “Supersonic Megafauna Collision” is just a lot of fun – further proof of the great class of the Greeks, who deserve much more attention.
