A top anti-fascist story. A timeless work regarding human nature, the beast within us but also the system that gave birth to Nazism. The short story was written in 1946 when Bertolt Brecht was in exile, but was published in the collection Calendar Stories in 1949.

Brecht creates a new theatre, where the stage is no longer “the boards that symbolize the world”, but a space for critical thinking and functional transformation (Umfuktionierung)

A few words regarding the project:

In 1945, shortly before the fall of Nazism, on a farm, a few kilometers from Berlin, lives a widowed mother with her daughter, a member of the Nazi Youth. Her son is serving in the SS on the eastern front. 20 captured Soviet concentration camp prisoners work on the farm.
But one of them looks amazingly like her son and so the mother, even though in the past she herself was an executive of the Nazi party, slowly begins to see differently the “subhumans” regarding whom she had heard terrible things.

However, the return of her son, who wants to go to Berlin for the “final battle” accelerates the developments. Her son wants to execute the 20 prisoners and blackmails his mother into helping him. “Your son or them.”
What will the mother do in the end? What will the viewer ultimately do? Are there innocent and guilty? Is there the possibility of neutrality or choice in a world of senseless violence and war?
