Farmers are calling for stricter import restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural products. A compromise reached by the EU states on Wednesday evening is only half a step in the right direction, according to a statement from several European farmers’ associations. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (VP) also believes that the proposed provisions do not go far enough.
The farmers’ associations are pushing for tariffs to also be levied on wheat and barley from Ukraine as soon as imports exceed a certain amount. The agreement currently provides for this for products such as poultry, eggs, sugar and corn. A majority in the EU Parliament is required for the final decision on the import rules.
As reported, the planned EU deforestation regulation is also controversial. On Thursday, Karl Fischer, chairman of the “Soja from Austria” association, spoke up. He warns once morest excessive bureaucracy. “Climate protection must not come at the expense of domestic protein supplies.”
