(CNN) China’s security apparatus is far from adorable. However, a new police officer has recently appeared on the scene, captivating the hearts of netizens with his stubby legs, smiling face, and constantly flicking his tail, and his popularity on social media is on the rise.
According to state media, Fuzai, a male corgi candidate to become a police dog, was unveiled this month in Weifang, Shandong province. At an event sponsored by the city’s police department, the dog appeared wearing a harness with the words “Weifang Police Dog” on it.
The popularity of Fuzi, which means “lucky boy” in Chinese, quickly took the internet by storm. A video posted on the Chinese social networking site Weibo has been viewed more than 1.3 million times. Articles with related hashtags have been viewed nearly 16 million times.
According to state media, Fuzi began training when she was two months old. Now that he’s six months old, he says he’s outperforming many of his peers.
On a short video account run by the Weifang Police Department, they also show videos of other puppies being trained to become police dogs.

In the video, which has received 38,000 likes, a German shepherd that looks like an excellent police dog walks alongside its trainer. At the end of the group, Fukuzai, dressed as a police officer with a strap attached to his back, follows, dangling his front legs. Its appearance resembles a backpack with fur.
The person in charge of the Weifang Police Department’s police dog base noted Fuzi’s high ability to adapt to the environment, his unfazed personality, and his willingness to retrieve things. He said this is a highly desirable quality in training. This was quoted by the state-run English newspaper China Daily.
According to reports, police also note that their short legs give them an advantage over other dog breeds when searching in tight spaces.
