For a few, it was all over long ago. And yet they mightn’t believe their ears when they heard the news on the car radio on frequency 107.5 on that Monday followingnoon on March 29, 1999, shortly following Graz: “Klaus Augenthaler has resigned as GAK trainer. His successor comes from Lithuania.” Maybe those few felt a little like Zoë Roth, the four-year-old girl from Mebane, North Carolina, in that moment. Roth wasn’t born yet in 1999, and it wasn’t until much later that she became a well-known meme as “Disaster Girl.” In the world-famous photo, the girl smiles mischievously into the camera, with a house burning in the background. And when Hape Kerkeling, Jochen Köstler and their team Zoë Roth were there on that Monday followingnoon, Austrian football and football journalists were the house on fire. Because for many it wasn’t over at that point.
