Historians are asking to take away the orders from the former ministers of the Kirchenstein government!

On the day of remembrance of the victims of communist terror, the center of public memory appealed to the President of the Republic of Lithuania and the Order Chapter with an appeal to take away all state awards from the times of the First Republic to former ministers and their deputies in the government of August Kirchenstein, formed in June 1940. Historians consider the actions of the collaborators of that time to be especially shameful, not worthy of the title of Knight of the Order of the independent Republic of Latvia. Even before his political activity, Kirchensteins was awarded two state awards for scientific achievements in the field of microbiology.

The Center for Public Memory also insists that former ministers Juris Paberzs, Janis Jagars, Pauls Leiņš, Pēteris Blaus and Roberts Dambitis be deprived of their orders. By the way, General Dambitis took part in the battles for the independence of Latvia and formed the troops of the already independent Latvia. After the Nazi occupation, he ended up in the dungeons of the Gestapo and went through a concentration camp.

Needless to say, all these former ministers of the Kirchenstein government have long since passed away. Of all the listed ministers, Peteris Blaus was the last to die, in 1971.
