Director Jeong Yong-taek, who presented ‘Newtown Culture Party’ at the Jecheon International Film Festival and the film ‘Party 51’ at the Jeonju International Film Festival, recently published a new book, ‘The Golden Age of Local Gentrifiers’ in e-book format.

Director Jeong Yong-taek explained that the reason he published this book was because, at a recent government event, opinions that were difficult to agree with were coming out, such as the idea that creating hip local commercial districts might prevent the disappearance of local regions.

In fact, the places that people at government events call hip local commercial districts are areas at risk of extinction due to excessive tourism, which causes rents to rise and residents to leave the area due to tourism. .

Director Jeong Yong-taek said in the book that the most important task for the administration is to prevent local extinction and protect the indigenous people in the process of regeneration and to prevent newly introduced young small business owners from being pushed out, but in reality, Hongdae and Hwangridan-gil are models of alley commercial districts. He explained that there is a high possibility that alleys across the country will end up being turned into ‘Ridan-gil’ due to the instigation of people who talk regarding it, and also connected the problems of falling birth rates and population extinction.

Gentrification is often caused by out-of-towners who come to hip places to take advantage of the real estate gap, and regarding this phenomenon that occurs in many alley commercial districts, director Yong-taek Jeong said that it is not a time of local prosperity, but rather a ‘time of accumulating the profits generated by gentrification as assets.’ He said he wanted to call it the ‘heyday of local gentrifiers.’
