Sixteen people have died from cholera in the Comoros over the past two months, according to the most recent epidemiological data made public Friday by the Ministry of Health of the Union of the Comoros.

Since the appearance of the first case on February 2, 2024, the ministry has recorded a total of 857 suspected cases, of which 549 were confirmed positive by rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and 58 by culture at the reference laboratory of the National Hospital Center of ‘El-Maarouf. The last two deaths linked to cholera, which occurred on March 25, are added to this toll.

According to the ministry, 493 patients have been declared completely cured of the disease since the start of the epidemic.

The cholera outbreak comes following a break of almost 17 years. The last cases recorded in the country date back to 2007 and 2008, totaling 1,555 cases.

According to Comorian health authorities, the current outbreak was imported from Tanzania by a boat carrying 25 people, which arrived in Moroni, capital of the Comoros, on January 31, 2024. Several passengers showed symptoms of cholera and one person died of suspicion of the disease.
