In connection with the upcoming holidays and warm spring weather, the Rescue Board reminds us that incineration is prohibited by law and is a flammable activity. In densely populated areas, bonfires are regulated by municipal legislation, and strict fire safety requirements must be observed in sparsely populated areas.

The warm and windy weather has made the grass cover dry and easily flammable. “Although the ground itself is still wet, the hay is dry and extremely flammable. In order for an extensive and rapidly developing fire to break out, only a small spark is enough,” said Tarmo Voltein, head of the Prevention Office of the Western Rescue Center. In densely populated areas, making bonfires is regulated by municipal legislation and is mostly prohibited. “Refuse companies offer convenient removal of garden and landscaping waste, so you don’t have to disturb your neighbors with campfire smoke or put your surroundings at risk.” When making a fire in a sparsely populated area, every fire-lighter must ensure that the fire does not spread to nature or buildings. “For this, you have to make the fire away from buildings, take into account the direction and strength of the wind, clear the area around the fire place of dry vegetation and limit it with stones or soil. The burning fire must be guarded and the first extinguishing means must be kept at hand – for example, hand extinguishers, buckets of water or a watering hose. When choosing a place for a fire, you must also take into account that there are no power lines nearby, because a hot vortex rising with fire smoke can cause a major accident near power lines,” Voltein explained the safety requirements associated with making a fire. Bonfires are often made despite the windy weather. “If you start a fire with strong winds, it will more than likely spread to the ground and cause a large-scale fire. Buildings often remain in the area of the fire, and there are cases when people have also died in the fire,” warned the head of the prevention office.

Knowingly burning the cost will result in quite significant fines. A person who frequently misses fire safety requirements can be fined by rescuers on the spot in a short procedure. More serious violations are processed by inspectors, whose fines can reach up to 1,200 euros. If the area of the fire exceeds one hectare in the forest or five hectares in the landscape, the Environmental Board will assess and process the environmental damage.

Nature is drying up quickly at the moment, and the rescuers have already responded to the first challenges related to fires and waste fires. More challenges are likely to come as the weather warms up, especially over the weekend. “We ask people to be extremely vigilant when making fires. When smoking, you also have to think regarding not letting the hot end of the smoke, cone or match fall down,” said Voltein.
