Paolo Macchiarini gets Swedish approval to serve his sentence in Spain

In December, Paolo Macchiarini applied to have his prison sentence moved to Spain, instead of serving it in Sweden. Paolo Macchiarini is an Italian citizen but has been living in Spain for some time.

In order for the prison sentence to be moved, both the Swedish and Spanish authorities must give their approval. And now the Swedish Probation Service has said yes to Paolo Macchiarini. All that remains is approval from the Spanish authorities, as Paolo Macchiarini is not a Spanish citizen.

»In view of the fact that Paolo Macchiarini is deemed to have his social domicile in Spain, the Correctional Service believes that the social reintegration is facilitated by the enforcement taking place in Spain. A transfer is also deemed appropriate in other respects,’ says the Swedish decision.

Paolo Macchiarini was sentenced last year to 2.5 years in prison for three counts of aggravated assault in the highly publicized case of synthetic tracheas in three patient cases where all patients died. The Court of Appeal concluded that in all cases Paolo Macchiarini removed their tracheas and that the patients were caused bodily harm and suffering. In this way, they followed the prosecutor’s line that the interventions have not been consistent with science and proven experience and that the interventions cannot go unpunished.

Paolo Macchiarini appealed the verdict to the Supreme Court. But there the legal process stopped. HD refused to review the case.
