In recent days, violence between members of the Turkish and Kurdish communities has taken on dramatic proportions. On Wednesday, representatives of Belgian-Turkish associations and the council of Kurdish communities advocated de-escalation.

Hostage taking, addresses broadcast on the networks, molotov cocktail… faced with the cycle of violence, Kurds and Turks call for calm

Brussels, Heusden-Zolder, Liège, Ghent, Maasmachelen, Beringen, Houthalen, Cheratte and Visé… All these cities have experienced violence in recent days. And they are widely commented on in Türkiye. The power in place represented by Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not miss these events. As evidenced by an astonishing scene revealed by our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws. The Turkish president is said to have called a 17-year-old Ghent student in person. The student from the DuO²-Ghent school was on a school visit and visited the European Parliament in Brussels.

Violence between Turks and Kurds in Belgium, Gray Wolves accused: “Disorganized ultranationalist Turkish individuals”

Since he was in the middle of Ramadan, he decided to walk around town during the lunch break with another student of Turkish origin (16 years old). He then came face to face in a pro-Kurdish demonstration. Spotted by demonstrators who asked them if they were Turkish, they were beaten and injured. This demonstration totally degenerated at Place du Luxembourg in Brussels.

A violence which reached the ears of Erdogan who asked him for news of his state of health and wished him a speedy recovery. Obviously, the president condemned this event, calling the perpetrators “immoral and despicable thugs.” He concluded with a surprising sentence: “The official authorities on site and our embassy are monitoring the situation.”

Still with our colleagues, the father of the victim spoke. “It’s great that the president is taking the time to call us, but above all I hope that my son recovers quickly.” The young man is still injured. “My son is in terrible pain. He suffered enormous trauma.”

We must now hope that the communiqué from the two diasporas will have immediate effects in reducing tension.
