AFTER a 44-year absence from the big screen, cartoon icon Popeye, the muscular sailor, is ready to lift anchor once more in a project that will delight his eagerly awaiting fans.

Variety, Tuesday (19/3), reported that the film project was the result of collaboration between Chernin Entertainment and King Features. The project indicates that this production will be a big project worth looking forward to.

The latest live action Popeye film has appointed Michael Caleo as the screenwriter. Caleo, who was previously involved in projects such as the Sexy Beast series, The Sopranos, and the film The Family, is expected to bring a fresh twist to this well-known story.

However, until now, there is no further information regarding the director who will lead this project, or the line-up of actors who will fill important roles in the film.

The official release date and year for the live action Popeye film have also not been announced, leaving fans with great curiosity.

This latest live action film is of particular interest due to the long time gap since the previous Popeye film in 1980. The film stars Robin Williams as Popeye the Sailorman, with Shelley Duvall starring opposite Olive Oyl.

In 1980, the film Popeye took the musical comedy genre under the direction of director Robert Altman. The story follows Popeye’s adventures as he arrives in the town of Sweethaven, searches for his missing father, and must fight Captain Bluto to save Olive Oyl from danger.

The character Popeye himself was first introduced through a comic strip on January 17, 1929 by EC Segar, in the comic Thimble Theater owned by King Features.

Since then, Popeye has become one of the most famous characters of his time, spawning numerous adaptations in various media, including a TV cartoon series, video games, and live action films.

Although E.C. Segar died in 1938, Popeye’s legacy was continued by his assistant, Bud Sagendorf, who kept the character’s popularity alive.

Now, with Popeye’s return to the big screen, the hopes of loyal fans and enthusiasts for the adventures of this magical sailor are certainly high.

It should be noted that previously, the cartoon character Popeye was also planned to be made into an animated film by Sony. Unfortunately, the project was canceled because the animation creator, Genndy Tartakovsky, decided to leave the project in 2015. (Z-1)
