GR Hursky welcomes BM Karner’s proposal for a weapons ban on Reumannplatz and reiterates his call for the ban to be extended to the entire city and for an increase in police forces.

Vienna (OTS/SPW-K) – “The safety of Viennese people is our top priority. That is why we, the Viennese Social Democrats, welcome the announcement by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner to introduce a weapons ban zone at Reumannplatz in the 10th district. This measure also receives the full support of our mayor Michael Ludwig and is a step in the fight once morest youth crime and violence,” emphasizes SPÖ security spokesman, local councilor Christian Hursky. But he also reminds us that Vienna’s mayor Ludwig had already called for a weapons ban zone for the whole of Vienna in January 2019.

“The weapons ban on Reumannplatz is a step forward for the security of our city, but still not enough. We appeal to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner to strengthen the police force in Vienna, especially in Favoriten. An increase to 500 police forces in Favoriten is the minimum and urgently necessary in order to cope with the staff shortage and the resulting burden on police personnel and at the same time increase security for all Viennese people. There is currently a shortage of 1,500 police officers across Vienna,” adds Hursky.

Vienna is constantly offering and optimizing a comprehensive package of measures that, in addition to the Interior Minister’s weapons ban, also includes preventative approaches to combating youth violence. “Reumannplatz is the beginning of the weapons ban zone. However, it is obvious that the ban must be extended to other areas such as Keplerplatz and Antonsplatz in the 10th district in order to achieve a comprehensive effect and increase the safety of Viennese people,” explains Hursky.

“We stand tirelessly at the side of the Viennese and take concrete measures, such as the youth college as an educational opportunity and numerous prevention programs, to improve the situation. Expanding the weapons ban and increasing the police presence in Vienna are crucial measures to improve the security situation. We therefore call on Interior Minister Karner to act in the interests of the security of our city and to provide the necessary resources,” concludes Hursky.
