Dairy Cows Testing Positive for Avian Flu in Texas and Kansas: What You Need to Know

2024-03-26 05:50:00

In Texas and Kansas, milk from dairy cows tested positive for avian flu, authorities reported Monday, March 25. The virus identified is influenza A H5N1, which usually causes epidemics in birds. Infected dairy cows show a lack of appetite, as well as a drop in lactation.

A week earlier, the avian flu virus had been diagnosed in goats in Minnesota, recalls ABC News. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, milk consumption is safe and the risk to the population is low. Milk from sick animals is redirected or destroyed.

Tests carried out on cows did not show changes in the virus that might facilitate its transmission to humans. The cows are believed to have contracted the virus through infected wild birds.

In poultry, avian flu epidemics lead to the culling of farms, this is not the case for cows which seem to recover in around ten days. ABC News points out that avian flu has already been observed in 48 different species of mammals.
