An MMA fighter bit another in the middle of a grappling
On a night that will go down in the annals of UFC history for its unusualness, the APEX in Las Vegas witnessed an unusual episode in the fight between Brazilians Igor Severino and Andre Lima during the UFC Vegas 89 event. The fight, What was shaping up to be an exciting matchup between two promising undefeated prospects, was marred by an incident that resulted in Severino’s disqualification.
The fight began in an even manner, with both fighters exchanging blows and positions of dominance during the first round, promising an intense battle. However, the duel took an unexpected turn in the second round. As Severino attempted to drive Lima once morest the fence in an effort to take him down, an act occurred that would change the course of the fight: Severino bit Lima’s left bicep.
The situation escalated quickly when a visibly shaken Lima walked away and raised his left arm to show referee Chris Tognoni the bite mark. Seeing the silhouette of the teeth stamped on his biceps, Tognoni did not hesitate to stop the fight and consulted with the commission’s doctor, who following checking the bite, led to the decision to be made to disqualify Severino.
This incident not only marked the first loss of Igor Severino’s professional career, leaving his record at 9-1, but also put his future in the UFC at risk. On Andre Lima’s side, his record improved to 8-0, maintaining his undefeated status.
Fans on social media were quick to echo what had happened and there were many who remembered Mike Tyson’s historic bite on Holyfield: “Mike Tyson, is that you?”, “He did Mike Tyson’s special move.” and “Iron Mike” were some of the comments that appeared along with the repetition of the moment in question.
A fighter tattooed his opponent’s bite
The president of the UFC, Dana White, did not hide his disapproval of the event, stating that “They were both promising undefeated fighters, if you get frustrated and want to get out of the fight, there are many ways to do it. The worst thing you can do is bite your rival. Now they cut you off and you lose the biggest opportunity of your life. Not to mention that he is going to have real problems with the NSAC,” he highlighted, hinting at the possibility of him being fired from the largest mixed martial arts company.
Lima’s reaction to the incident was unique, since he decided to immortalize the bite with a tattoo that shows Severino’s marked teeth, accompanied by the phrase “I have the f… bite bonus.” This fact was even highlighted by Dana White through a story on his Instagram account in which he showed how the drawing had remained on the fighter’s skin, along with a message: “I was going to give him 25 thousand dollars, but now he I will give 50 thousand. This is incredible”
Lima received a post-fight bonus for “Bite of the Night,” adding a note of irreverence to the evening. The remaining bonuses of the day were awarded to Fernando Padilla and Payton Talbott for “Performance of the Night”, while Jarno Errens and Steven Nguyen took the recognition for “Fight of the Night”, closing a UFC night that will be remembered for its strangeness as much as the competition itself.
