Urgent Call for Aid: UN Chief Urges Israel to Remove Obstacles and Increase Crossings for Gaza Relief

On Sunday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Israel to “remove the remaining obstacles” to the entry of relief materials to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, noting the need to increase crossings and access points for aid.

Guterres explained, during a press conference in Cairo with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, that “the land route is the most effective and efficient in transporting heavy goods,” stressing that the entry of aid “requires an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons.”

He highlighted that “the only efficient and effective way to transport heavy goods in order to meet humanitarian needs in the Gaza Strip is by land, which includes a huge increase in commercial deliveries.”

He also pointed out that “the daily assault on the dignity of Palestinians creates a credibility crisis for the international community.”

On Saturday, Guterres visited the Egyptian side of the border with the Gaza Strip, and said that he came to the city of Rafah “carrying the voices of the vast majority of countries in the world who are fed up with what is happening” in Gaza, where “homes have been demolished and families and entire generations have perished as famine besieges the population.”

The visit of the Secretary-General of the United Nations came at a time when Israel threatens to launch a major military operation in Rafah, despite international appeals to prevent such an attack.

The majority of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people seek refuge in the vicinity of Rafah. Although conditions are worse in the north of the Strip, the plight of civilians across the Strip has worsened sharply as the conflict continues.
