One month before the deadline for registering candidates and pacts for the municipal elections, the opposition encourages the presidential candidacy of Evelyn Matthei (UDI), leaving the decision to re-run for mayor of Providencia in her hands.
The current communal leader of said commune might raise her candidacy to remain in the municipal seat for a third term, however, she might also leave it and focus on the 2025 presidential race as the main figure of Chile Vamos, as proposed by the president of National Renewal, Rodrigo Galilea, in El Mercurio.
In that sense, deputy Henry Leal (UDI), Matthei’s colleague, pointed out that “the decision to re-run or not is her decision,” clarifying that “we are going to respect it.”
However, he indicated that “I would like to see Evelyn Matthei, of course as our main (presidential) figure, touring Chile supporting all the candidates for governor and mayor in our sector. “Whoever wins the municipal elections has the best chance of winning the presidential election next year, and we have to act with a sense of responsibility and generosity.”
Likewise, Leal aimed to reach an agreement, whether electoral or by omission, with Democrats, Yellows and Republicans to bring a single candidate.
For his part, RN caucus leader Frank Sauerbaum believes in Matthei’s potential for the presidential election, however, he also left the decision in the hands of the communal leader.
