The construction of the first Data Center (Data Center) of Microsoft in the wider area of the Eastern Attica Regional Unit begins, with an assignment following a relevant tender to RENCO in collaboration with TERNA SA.
It is an industrial-type facility consisting mainly of mechanical and electrical equipment for storing and processing data in the Cloud and is structured as a main Equipment Building (ATH04 Building) and an Administration Building (Admin Block) accompanied by a number of supporting facilities and infrastructure in the surrounding area, while its design follows LEED (Gold Grade) certification requirements.
The construction object corresponding to the contract amounts to 100 million euros (including VAT) and provides for the completion of the studies, the construction and the commissioning of the first Microsoft Data Center with a total installed capacity of 19.2MW in Spata.
Construction work is set to begin in the near future.
Referring to the undertaking of the relevant project, the Managing Director of TERNA SA, Mr. Christos Panagiotopoulos, stated: “We are particularly happy that our joint venture with RENCO prevailed in such an important tender, for such an important and demanding project. Once once more, our ability to distinguish ourselves through competitive processes is proven thanks to the solid know-how, experience and credibility we have built following half a century of TERNA’s activity in the construction sector. We are sure that with the valuable cooperation of RENCO we will meet the expectations, but also the trust of Microsoft, making a great technological investment for Greece a reality”.
“This is an excellent result for RENCO and TERNA SA, noted Mr President of RENCO, Mr. Giovanni Gasparini, referring to the dominance of the two companies in the tender. “It is proof that our Italian know-how, skills and professionalism continue to add value to our work, so that multinationals operating around the world, such as Microsoft, trust us.
The Data Center will be developed on a 22.3 hectare section of the total area of 85 hectares in the Spata business park and will also include the construction of supporting facilities as well as water storage infrastructure.
All work will be performed in accordance with LEED requirements for environmental energy sustainability. This project represents an excellent opportunity for RENCO and TERNA to demonstrate their commitment to innovation and sustainability. We are proud to work with big customers like Microsoft and all the companies involved in the project. Our vision is to create a state-of-the-art, energy efficient and environmentally friendly Data Center that will act as a model of excellence.”
“Another milestone is the award of this project which essentially marks the start of work for Microsoft’s first Data Center. It is an important moment for the country as a whole as an investment of hundreds of millions comes to fruition. We are happy that our fellow travelers on this route are notable partners such as TERNA and RENCO with significant experience in the construction of data centers”, said the Managing Director of Microsoft for Greece, Cyprus and Malta, Gianna Andronopoulou”.
