A media website said that Russia will use its veto power in the UN Security Council once morest the US draft resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Axios news website said that 10 countries will present an alternative draft resolution linking the ceasefire to the release of detainees, indicating that Washington will vote once morest it.
Russia had previously expressed its dissatisfaction with “anything that does not call for an immediate ceasefire” in Gaza.
Russia’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, said that Moscow would not be satisfied “with anything that does not call for an immediate ceasefire,” saying that this is what US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is pressing for and what “everyone” wants.
Polyansky questioned the wording of the draft and said: “What is imperative? I have a duty to give you $100, but… it is just a necessity, not $100.”
The Russian envoy added: “I think there are those who are manipulating the international community.”
This comes as the UN Security Council is scheduled to vote on Friday on a US-sponsored resolution declaring that an “immediate and sustainable ceasefire” in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is “necessary” to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid to be delivered to more than two million hungry Palestinians.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said she was optimistic that the new, tougher draft resolution would be approved by the 15-member council on Friday, according to what the Associated Press reported.
