Tüechli Couture: Celebrities are now dressing up as table napkins

You’re currently seeing lots of napkin looks on the red carpets. What is that? Dresses that resemble napkins. We explain what’s behind it – and who wears it.

Dressing like a napkin isn’t an impulse that comes over you in the morning in front of the closet? It’s a shame, because It girls like Kim Kardashian and Emily Ratajkowski are now showing that the napkin look can really be worth it.

What does the napkin look like?

Well, just like a fancy dinner napkin. It is usually white, made of a fine fabric and is folded into different shapes. It feels delicate in the mouth. At a fine dinner it is elegantly draped on a table (and later on your lap).

The pieces that are now referred to as napkin dresses are also elegantly draped. For example, shapes with edges, creases or folds are integrated into the mostly white robes.

Who’s wearing the trend on the red carpet?

Stars, models and It girls wear the look. For example, Emma Stone’s Oscar dress is compared to a napkin. Her robe has a peplum with pleated details. On Twitter it says: “What a stylish folded napkin.”

Stone isn’t the only star to appear at Oscar events in a napkin look: At an followingparty, Kim Kardashian wore a white Balenciaga dress with a pointed top. A tweet reads: “This is the napkin at dinner in a fancy restaurant.”

Model Emily Ratajkowski shines in a Jacquemus dress that also resembles a napkin (and also seems to defy gravity) due to its color, fine fabric and angular top.

Do you wear the look elsewhere?

Yes. It-girl Hailey Bieber wears a white dress with knot detail for her husband, Justin Bieber’s, thirtieth birthday. This can also remind you of a napkin.

Emily Ratajkowski seems to have developed a taste for table decorations. Even in everyday life in New York City, she wears a top that resembles a napkin.

But if you’re honest: almost every white textile made of fine fabric is vaguely reminiscent of a napkin. This also applies to influencer Emili Sindlev’s skirt, which is decorated with some floral details.

Influencer Leonie Hanne’s white dress also looks like a crumpled napkin.

Here’s how to recreate the look

If you want to imitate the napkin look, it’s best to choose tops or dresses in white. Fine fabrics with firm edges, like those of Emily Ratajkowsi and Kim Kardashian, look particularly elegant. However, something that is more distantly reminiscent of stiff – or wrinkled – dinner napkins can also be used as a napkin look.

Would you wear the napkin look yourself? Why – or why not?
