The municipal council on the notice on Nibe in Markaryd: “No mood of doom”

SVT visited Markaryd the day following the announcement that 264 out of 1,300 employees at Nibe were being notified of layoffs.

Both Group CEO Gerteric Lindquist and municipal board chairman Bengt Germundsson (KD) say that the external influence has been decisive.

– We believe that new housing production will more or less stop at this interest rate, says Gerteric Lindquist.

In the clip, you can also hear what one of the employees at Nibe thinks the day following the notice.

“Signal to colleagues at national level”

– It is also somewhat of a signal to my colleagues at national level and at European level. It is not enough to talk regarding the green transition, but you also have to show it in practice, says Bengt Germundsson (KD) and continues:

– Here we have a company that invested in the green transition and where in Europe you see an increase in gas and oil dependence. It’s a little lame.

Believe in the future

Although the CEO sees the notice as a necessary measure, Gerteric Lindquist answers an obvious “yes” to the question of whether he thinks that Nibe in Markaryd will need to hire once more in the future.

– It is clear that we do, we are facing a necessary adjustment. This must be a bump in the curve, says Gerteric Lindquist.

– I think that the residents of the municipality have great confidence in the company’s ability to meet the future that exists even if it happens to be difficult right now. So it’s not a mood of doom, but an understanding that this is to stand strong when the economy turns, says Bengt Germundsson (KD).

Before it is clear who will actually be affected by the notification, union negotiations will be carried out.
