“There is no humanitarian crisis” in the Gaza Strip. After the UN assessment of an imminent famine, the Jewish state believes that it does not reflect the entire “reality of the situation” on the ground.
“We don’t think there is a humanitarian crisis,” an official from the Israeli Defense Ministry body which coordinates the army’s civilian activities in the Palestinian territories told journalists in Geneva on Thursday (Cogat ). “There are challenges,” admits Major Lior Salama.
A few days ago, the UN estimated that more than 1.1 million inhabitants are facing “a situation of catastrophic hunger”, close to famine. It was based on the Integrated Food Safety Classification Framework (IPC) report released on Monday. “This does not represent what is observed in reality,” according to Major Salama.
According to her, the UN has been carrying out its assessment on an average of trucks since October. This has increased significantly in recent months, she says.
