Ronnie Flex believes that the mission he had with his protest in Rotterdam has been successful. He said this on Tuesday at the Schouwburgplein in the city following walking there with dozens of fans. The rapper wanted to draw attention to what he said were “strangling contracts” from management agency TopNotch.
“What I hoped has already happened,” the 31-year-old rapper said to the press present. “I wanted to spread awareness. That I would make something happen and that it would be discussed. This is just beautiful. Mission has already been achieved because you are all standing here.” On the square, the rapper then recorded a music video with his fans for the protest song he made.
Nearly a hundred fans responded to the rapper’s call to come to Rotterdam on Tuesday. They walked around with signs bearing the slogan ‘StopNotch’.
With his protest, Flex wants to draw attention to young artists who sign contracts that can be unfavorable for them. The reason is his own contract with hip-hop label Top Notch, which he signed as a 19-year-old. In his own words, he received 8 percent of the proceeds from his music. “Yes, I signed that and yes, I was an adult at the time, but I spent eight years adjusting the contract,” he said in Rotterdam.
After the artist expressed his appreciation to the fans for coming to Rotterdam, Flex and the fans walked a number of laps around the square while the protest song sounded loudly from the speakers they brought with them. About the name of the song, Flex said that it will be “possibly Kees Closed”, which might be a reference to Top Notch boss Kees de Koning. When the recordings were almost over, Flex had his picture taken with some fans. The atmosphere remained friendly all evening.
