Here’s why this March moon will be extra special.
Sugar Moon
The March full moon is also called the “sugar moon.” The reason is simple: it occurs at a time when cold weather causes frost and the milder daytime temperature stimulates the flow of maple sap. It’s the sugaring season and, incidentally, the peak of this period corresponds to March 25, the day of the full moon, at 3:00 a.m. precisely. Easter is approaching and must mark the beginning or end of sugaring, according to a popular saying.
“The weather for the current month of March is making life difficult for popular beliefs,” explains Réjean Ouimet, meteorologist. Indeed, Easter is early this year in the context of an early spring where sugars also took the lead quickly. So this does not mark the beginning of the sugars, Easter may not mark the end of the sugars either since conditions should remain favorable for the flow until the beginning of April for the warmer regions. Since strong heat should stay away from Quebec. »
Penumbral lunar eclipse
It is between March 22 and 27 that the moon will be almost full, or more than 95%. But the positioning of the three stars will be particular since a lunar eclipse always occurs 15 days before or following a solar eclipse. Barely a few minutes following the full moon, the Earth’s natural satellite will eclipse to produce a phenomenon called a penumbral eclipse. Our planet will therefore position itself in front of the sun which illuminates the moon.
Little moon
The moon can appear small when it is further from the earth. In fact, on March 23, it will be at its peak at a distance of 406,281 kilometers. This is why it will appear smaller two days later when it is full.
“The moon will be at its furthest point from the earth this month on March 23, a few days before the full moon,” explains Réjean Ouimet. All things considered, it is a small moon that will present itself to our eyes. Conversely, during the eclipse of April 8, the moon will be at perigee (closest to the April Earth) which will contribute to the total during the eclipse of the sun. »
