Lara Gut-Behrami took no risks during the first downhill training of the World Cup final in Saalbach. The Ticino woman ranked clearly behind the Austrians Cornelia Hütter and Stephanie Venier, who can still compete with her for the small globe of the specialty.

LGB finished in 18th place, more than two seconds behind the best time set by Kira Weidle. Third, Hütter seemed at ease on the Saalbach track, while Venier took 7th place.

Lara Gut-Behrami leads the downhill standings with a 19-point lead over Sofia Goggia, whose season ended in February. Venier, 3rd, is 68 points behind Gut-Behrami, Hütter, 4th, 72 points. If the Ticino woman finishes at worst 7th during this descent, she will win the small globe of the specialty for the first time.

Hählen finally gives up

Joana Hählen, who had planned to return this week, also decided not to start this training. The Bernese skier did not finish the 2nd descent of Cortina d’Ampezzo following suffering a shock to her right knee.

Examinations revealed a torn cruciate ligament, which Hählen decided to treat conservatively following consulting doctors.
