Many Arab artists inherited talent from their fathers, and some of them derived their love of art from their mothers.

Amal Salem and Sawsan Badr

Behind the curtain of the National Theater in Cairo, Amal Salem was placing a chair for her daughter, Sawsan Badr. The little girl sits and watches her mother’s rehearsals and theatrical performances. Between sleep and wakefulness, Sawsan was inhaling the scent of the wood and getting closer, year following year, to her dream of acting.

As a child, Badr memorized the play “Cleopatra,” the text of which was written by the poet Ahmed Shawqi. She would also run around behind her mother at home, repeating verses of poetry that her mother had memorized.

Artistic preoccupations did not rob actress Amal Salem (1924 – 2010) of her motherhood. Artist Sawsan Badr remembers her as a dedicated mother who cared regarding her child’s affairs. She was content with small roles during her career, but those brief appearances, most notably the character “Amouna” in the play “Rayya and Sakina,” were enough to leave an impact on the daughter, who entered the Institute of Dramatic Arts despite her father’s objection.

Doria Ahmed and Suhair Ramzi

Professional colleagues know the extent of actress Suhair Ramzi’s attachment to her mother, artist Doria Ahmed. She has always said that her mother is the center of her life and more than a twin to her, and that with her death in 2003, she lost her compass and security.

It was natural that this close relationship should be linked between them, as Doria Ahmed separated from Suhair’s father when she was still pregnant with her, and she later became like a father and mother to her daughter. It was not until the age of 13 that Suhair met her father, but they only stayed together for one year.

During her childhood, Suhair accompanied her mother to work, and she did not hesitate to enter the field in her turn, becoming a child actress at the age of six. At that time, Doria Ahmed was famous for her roles as a rural girl, and later when Suheir Ramzi became a professional, the mother stopped working and devoted herself to taking care of her daughter and her busy film and television schedule.

Ramzi gave her mother care and attention following she also retired, and she used to fill the void by taking care of her and traveling with her for treatment.

Zizi Mustafa and Menna Shalabi

“My mother is everything.” With these words, actress Menna Shalaby summarizes her relationship with her mother, the artist Zizi Mostafa. Menna carried the artistic legacy from her mother and expressed her great gratitude, especially since Zizi Mustafa retired from acting and dancing at an early stage, following Shalabi expressed her annoyance regarding her mother being a dancer.

Zizi Mustafa devoted herself to raising Menna, and she returned to the limelight following 18 years. Whenever she was asked regarding her daughter, she answered: “I do not regret retiring, and the Lord honored me with someone better than me… my daughter.” As for Menna Shalabi, whenever she mentioned her mother, she said that she was not a traditional mother and that she was a great woman: “If I have good qualities, I take them from her.”

Dalal Abdel Aziz, Donia and Amy Samir Ghanem

Being born in the house of Dalal Abdel Aziz and Samir Ghanem means that you will inevitably be struck by the arrow of art and comedy. It was not surprising, therefore, that Dounia and Amy carried the torch and continued on the path. The two daughters received support from their parents, and the artist Dalal Abdel Aziz did not stand in the way of the talent that emerged in them at an early age.

Dounia and Amy accompanied their parents to theaters and filming locations, and the two artists did not make any effort to keep them away from the limelight or from television programs, which strengthened their self-confidence.

Dalal Abdel Aziz discovered the talent of imitation in the two girls, and following a few years their acting abilities appeared, which Samir and Dalal helped develop. However, entering the world of art did not come by force, but rather through the desire of Dounia and Amy.

Despite the accumulation of years of experience, the two stars never abandoned their mother’s opinion, knowing that the advice never turned into indoctrination or compliments. Amy and Donia Samir Ghanem brought together 8 joint works with their mothers, before she passed away in 2021.

Hopes and Excellency Zayed

Unlike Dalal Abdel Aziz, the artist Amal Zayed refused her daughter, Maali, to enter the field of acting. She was the one who experienced this world early through small roles. It was not difficult for her to abandon it in 1944 when she got married.

Amal Zayed (1910 – 1972) retired from acting for 14 years in order to take care of her husband and children. She sacrificed her artistic ambition for the sake of that marriage, and this is something that Maali (1953 – 2014) did not like. However, she returned to the spotlight in 1959 in larger roles, most of which were in the role of the mother, and she was known as the caring mother on the Egyptian screen.

In her daughter’s eyes, she was a decisive and strict mother, but on the other hand, she always said: “I am lucky to have you as her daughter because I inherited people’s love for her.”

Suhair Al Morshedy and Hanan Mutawa

Artist Suhair Al-Morshedy says regarding her daughter, Hanan Mutawa, that she knew acting while she was in her womb, as she was pregnant with her during rehearsals and filming. But despite her conviction and despite discovering her daughter’s talent at a young age, she kept her away from the limelight. Later, when Hanan expressed her desire to go into acting, her mother objected, unlike her father, who was not satisfied with her entering the Institute of Commerce, but rather saw her in the Institute of Dramatic Arts.

The experience on the ground changed Al-Morshedy’s opinion, as she saw in her daughter a self-made artist who “proved that art is not exclusively hereditary,” knowing that the artistic style is different between the two.

Bossi and Mai El-Sherif

Mai Al-Sherif accompanied her parents, Nour and Bossi, to the studio when she was young, and she took her first role at the age of eight. Bossi, who entered the field in 1961, recalls that her daughter “was focusing on details and asking regarding many things.” But she never imposed art on her, despite her feeling of her talent, but rather helped her in indirect ways by enrolling her in acting workshops.

Among the artists who immersed themselves in the field, like their mothers, is actress Rania Mahmoud Yassin, who was influenced by her mother, Shahira. From Lebanon, actress Lilian Nimri, who also grew up in an artistic home with parents Abdo and Alia Nimri. She is their only daughter who devoted her life to drama and comedy.

As for music, Nihad Fattouh inherited the beauty of her voice from her mother, the artist Souad Mohamed, and she always sang her most beautiful songs, such as “I Promise You” and “I Miss You.” From the new generation, the voice of Aline Lahoud emerged, who carried in her person and art much of the legacy of her mother, the artist Salwa Al-Qatrib.
