In 2024, Holding Graz Wasserwirtschaft will start reinvesting in the Feldkirchen transport pipeline and modernizing the water pipelines on the Murfeld with two important large-scale projects for the security of supply for Graz residents.

With a total length of 6.8 km, the Feldkirchen transport pipeline is one of the most important supply pipelines for the Graz water industry and connects the city of Graz with the Feldkirchen waterworks. Around 15 percent of the city of Graz’s daily water needs are covered by the Feldkirchen waterworks and the transport pipeline that ends at the Lagergasse/Karlauer belt intersection; during peak times or in the event of disruptions, this proportion increases to up to 50 percent.

Built in 1950, the line runs across numerous private properties and is in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings. Due to the age, the associated increasing leakage of the pipes and the unfavorable location on private property, the Graz Wasserwirtschaft Holding is investing 26.7 million euros in the renovation and re-laying of this pipe over the next few years.

Subject to all resolutions and a positive audit by the city auditor, construction is scheduled to start in the Lagergasse area at the beginning of 2025 and last until 2026.

Modernization of the water supply in Murfeld

There is also a major investment in water supply in the Murfeld between Murfelderweg and Liebenauer Hauptstrasse. When all domestic wells might no longer be used in 1983 due to the presence of perchlorethylene in the groundwater, the city of Graz built connections to the public water network between 1984 and 1986, thus providing residents with safe drinking water. The cast iron pipes used at the time are now outdated and need to be replaced. From this year until 2033, around 23.5 km of water pipes will be gradually replaced and renewed in the area mentioned. The investment volume is 15 million euros.

Finance and Investment City Councilor Manfred Eber: “Ensuring a drinking water supply for the population is one of the most fundamental tasks of a city, which we are ensuring with the utmost care and responsibility through these extensive investments.”
