It had to be the fruit of a wind of change, the new name that would overturn the party, eliminating the usual names, to rediscover a direct relationship with the voters and above all a political line that seemed inexorably lost. In the end, however, Elly Schlein proved to be a flop, forcing the party’s “big names” to remain on the field. Not that they mind, let’s be clear. And so first it fell to Pierluigi Bersani, tossed left and right between Sardinia and Abruzzo like a rare talisman.
Then it was the turn of Nicola Zingaretti and Dario Nardella, who strangely still appears as a new face despite having been in the field since 2004 when he entered the city council in Florence among the ranks of the Democrats of the Left. Precisely the old DS who still represent the hard core of the party, despite everything, also because they are the only ones who know how the “company” works. Nardella and Zingaretti will run in the Center constituency to enter the European Parliament. Because the two may be well-known faces but when it comes to winning, vote packages count and the two have them. Another important name, which was among the caciques a few months ago, is that of the mayor of Bari Antonio Decaro who will run in the Southern constituency. The former president of the Chamber Laura Boldrini might also find a place, but only if Marta Bonafoni were to miss out .
Added to these are also a series of candidate journalists. Sandro Ruotolo, the head of the dem secretariat for information, culture and memory, is the last in chronological order. The Rai journalist announced that if asked he might also run for the European Championships. At the moment he is without seats having lost in 2022 when he was nominated for the Chamber of Deputies in the single-member constituency Campania 1-07 (Torre del Greco) by the centre-left coalition. On that occasion he obtained only 21.79%, being surpassed by Gaetano Amato of the 5 Star Movement (34.26%) and by Annarita Patriarca of the centre-right (33.99%).
Together with him there might also be Lucia Annunziata who, following having sworn once more and once more that she would “never, ever” run for the European elections “neither with the Democratic Party nor with any other party” finally gave in to the sirens of Strasbourg. She will run in the Southern constituency. Michele Santoro, already MEP in 2004 with the «United in the Olive Tree» list, has also decided to run for the European elections. Not with the Democratic Party but with the “Peace earth dignity” list which among the candidates includes the participation of the cartoonist Vauro, the publisher Ginevra Bompiani, the actor Paolo Rossi, the Russian writer Nicolai Lilin, the mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi, the historian Angelo d’Orsi, Pino Arlacchi, the secretary of the Communist Refoundation Maurizio Acerbo.
Among other things, this commitment to politics by Ruotolo and Annunziata in the ranks of the Democratic Party lends itself to those who do not believe Telemeloni’s narrative. A skepticism that also takes shape in light of Agcom’s monthly monitoring. The Democratic Party «had 10.7% overall in the various editions of Tg1, Tg2, Tg3 and RaiNews24, more than Fratelli d’Italia (10.2%), more than the M5s in third place with 9.4% and much more than Lega (6.2%) and Forza Italia (5.3%)”. In detail, the Dems gained 15% on Tg3, which has always been a fiefdom of the centre-left, and 14% on Tg1 considered “Melonian”, where instead Fdi has around one percentage point less. Numbers that the president and vice president of the Rai Supervisory Commission Francesco Filini and Augusta Montaruli commented by declaring: «The Democratic Party really has a lot of nerve in denouncing an alleged “occupation” of Rai or even a “lotting” by FdI . A party that has always considered the Public Service available.”
In the end the news is nice, it’s nice to cultivate hopes for a different future, but when you glimpse the bad situation it’s always better to turn to those who know the secrets to managing the company.
