VAZ-21011 and 21013: how did they differ from the “kopek”? : 5koleso — LiveJournal

In Zhiguli times, almost any man (and many ladies too) instantly noticed something unusual in a line of cars. Any, even the most insignificant touch that distinguished the car seen from the usual serial one, instantly aroused genuine interest: they say, what is this? At first, all Togliatti cars were called simply – the “first” model, the “third” model… And everyone understood that we were talking regarding a VAZ-2101 or VAZ-2103, respectively.

Today, almost everyone agreed that all “Zhiguli” were, in fact, the same “unit” – the VAZ-2101. In modern terms, it was either a facelift or restyling. But then no one had any doubts: the VAZ-2103 is the third model of the Zhiguli. The second model was considered the VAZ-2102 station wagon. But then the August issue of the magazine “Behind the Wheel” for 1974 comes out with the article “VAZ-21011 – the fourth model of the Volga Automobile Plant”! The author of the article is the chief designer of VAZ V. Solovyov.

To be honest, the logic of this name is difficult to understand. Of course, some changes appeared in the car “a la 2101”, but it didn’t look like a new model at all. However, the chief designer knows better – let’s remember how this car differed from the 2101 model.

First we look from the outside. You can immediately see that the fangs on the bumpers have disappeared – instead, rubber inserts have appeared along the entire length. The decorative grille of the radiator lining has changed its design – large rectangles promise to match the almost rectangular VAZ emblem. Headlights… the headlights are almost the same in appearance, but have a different design – the dimensions are located in them, and the orange sidelights now only blink. But this is not immediately clear.

Let’s look from behind. A reversing light appeared on the rear panel. The rear lights have changed to accommodate the reflectors, which previously stood separately. Decorative forced exhaust ventilation grilles appeared on the rear pillars.

In the cabin, the new seats are striking – they are closer in shape to the foppish model 2103. The window handles have become plastic. In general, the shine has become much less: chrome has disappeared even from the instrument cluster. The instrument panel is lined with wood-like film – probably there was some charm in this. But here is an important innovation: a foot pedal has appeared to control windshield washing. However, it will soon be replaced by a steering column switch.

Among the innovations invisible to the eye, we note the modified design of the interior mirror: now, upon impact, it is separated from the body, increasing driving safety. The same safety applies to the annular groove of the steering shaft.

Under the hood there is a dual master cylinder reservoir with a fluid level sensor. The indicator is common with the parking brake.

What regarding the motor? Model – “1300”, VAZ-21011. Power – at least 69 hp. at 5600 rpm. The VAZ-2101 had 64 hp. Torque – 9.6 kgm at 3400 rpm. Acceleration to “hundreds” is 20 seconds, the “kopek” had 22. Maximum speed is 143 km/h. Fuel consumption… increased by 0.2 -0.3 liters.

This is the “fourth” VAZ model. However, many believed and still believe that from the outside it looks more elegant than the VAZ-2101.

What is a VAZ-21013? This modification with the VAZ-2101 engine appeared in 1977 as an export version of the VAZ-21011 for countries where special attention was paid to taxation based on engine displacement. You would have to pay more for a “regular” VAZ-21011, and this did not suit the importers. But in the end, the model ended up on our market, causing displeasure among buyers: the engine is the weakest of VAZ’s. The only external difference between 21013 and 21011 is the rear nameplate. On the “thirteenth” they wrote Lada – 1200s, and on the “eleventh” – “Zhiguli 1300”. Otherwise, the cars looked the same, but 21013, due to the “non-our” inscription, looked a little more foppish.

By the way, in the 1982 film “Traffic Inspector,” the bad director of a car service center, Mr. Trunov, played by Nikita Mikhalkov, impressively drives around in a VAZ-21013. Managed to get it, therefore! Note that the VAZ-21013 is characterized by the use of imported parts. It might use, for example, Yugoslav Trepca batteries, as well as a Hungarian distributor.

Today, if models 2101 and 21011 were in the same car dealership, a rare buyer would notice the difference between them. But half a century ago, every little thing seemed important.
