The Florence Prosecutor’s Office documents a resurgence of former Red Brigade members, signaling the possibility that they influence actions and protests once morest Israel, orchestrated by social centers and student collectives. According to Digos investigations, revealed by Il Giornale, there is a dangerous convergence between old militants of the Red Brigades and new pro-Palestine movements. This trend, already highlighted in the Italian intelligence report for 2023, is now confirmed with names and surnames. The far-left student movement “Cambiare Rotta”, recently at the center of media attention for having prevented speeches by David Parenzo and Maurizio Molinari, has chosen former Red Brigade member Francesco Piccioni as a leading figure for its membership campaign. The latter, founder of the Roman column of the BR, was involved in strategic actions together with Curcio, Franceschini and Moretti, without ever having expressed regret for his involvement.
Piccioni also criticized the Italian state for its alleged obsession with the Red Brigades who fled to France, while the “Potere al Popolo” movement, affiliated with “Cambiare Rotta”, reserved him a place on the guarantee committee. In Florence, the Cpa Firenze Sud social center relies on the lessons of Pasquale Abatangelo, a former Red Brigade member known for having been one of the thirteen political prisoners whose release the Red Brigades asked for in exchange for Aldo Moro, without ever repenting or dissociating himself.
Even the presence of Francesco Giordano, former member of the Red Brigades, at the procession for Free Palestine in Milan highlights a re-emergence of these figures in contemporary activism. This renewed involvement of former red terrorists raises concerns regarding the possible negative influence they might exert on current political and social movements and in the streets that raise their voices in defense of Palestine and protest once morest Israel for the war in Gaza.
