Seven organizations from the forestry world warned, through a public statement, of the shortcomings of the bill that seeks to regulate the prevention of forest and rural fires (Bulletin 16335-14) and raised the need for more comprehensive legislation.

The signatories, including Corma, Pymemad, the Association of Forestry Contractors and the College of Forestry Engineers, assured that, “it is urgent to have a fire law that is truly up to the problem we face as a society. That is, a legal body that provides capabilities to the State and the respective owners to prevent the occurrence of fires, fight with adequate resources and reduce the spread of fire, investigate the causes and pursue intentionality, and recover the areas affected by fires. .

Along these lines, they expressed that the project in process, “focuses mainly on reducing the spread, it does not comprehensively address the complete fire management cycle. It does not provide new preventive tools nor does it address the gaps in the fight once morest intentionality and negligence, nor does it consider sufficient support for rural areas affected by fires, especially small landowners.”

“Chile needs a fire law that prevents catastrophes like the one that occurred this summer in the Valparaíso region, which cost the lives of 133 compatriots and which still has no responsibilities following the origin and management of the emergency. This tragedy with the current project would not have been avoided, because with its reductionist approach, it does not take care of the urban reality that exists at the interface,” they noted.
