Here’s one of those rumors that’s good to read and hard to believe, especially since it comes from a source that isn’t 100% reliable when it comes to leaks regarding future Apple products. But anyway, let’s go.
According to the leaker Instant Digital on the Chinese social network WeiboApple would be working on a new type of front glass for the “iPhone 17” (next year’s model) which would be both more resistant to scratches as there would also be a special anti-reflective layer.
The big challenge for smartphone glass manufacturers today is to balance resistance to drops (cracks, shattering) with resistance to scratches, since, according to the laws of Physics, one basically goes “ once morest” the other.
Another aspect that can also be affected by these advances in resistance, and the leaker mention this, it is the oleophobic protection of the glass. It may be that this new version actually becomes more resistant to scratches, but on the other hand it would show more fingerprints than the current one as the original oleophobic protection comes off — in less time than expected.
The front glass of iPhones is called Ceramic Shield and was developed by Apple in partnership with Corning, originally introduced on the iPhone 12 in 2020. In May 2021, Apple announced an investment of over US$45 million in the supplier.
