Democratic Party of Korea Primary Results: Director Su-jin Cho Wins Over Incumbent Yong-jin Park – Latest Updates and Analysis

The Democratic Party of Korea (Dong-A DB) announced on the 19th that Su-jin Cho, director of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, won once morest incumbent lawmaker Yong-jin Park, who was re-elected from the Non-Lee Jae-myung faction, in the primary for Gangbuk, Seoul, where former lawmaker Chung Bong-ju’s nomination was cancelled.

The primary for Gangbuk, Seoul was held for two days starting on the 18th through online voting with 70% of Rights Party members nationwide and 30% of Rights Party members from Gangbuk. Rep. Park received a penalty of 30% reduction in primary votes due to being ranked in the bottom 10% of incumbent lawmakers. On the other hand, Director Cho received 25% additional points as a ‘female rookie’.

Representative Park issued a statement following the results of the primary were announced, saying, “Today, I received results without a movie-like twist,” adding, “I don’t have any different feelings because I knew and accepted that it was a primary where defeat was obvious and a primary with a predetermined conclusion. However, I hope that something like this will never happen once more in the political history of the Republic of Korea or in the future of the Democratic Party.”

He continued, “For the past month, I have sometimes wondered if they were filming the ‘Truman Show’ without my knowledge.” He continued, “Why should Gangbuk-eul be an exception in the nomination succession despite receiving a majority of the votes from both the party and the public? Why should party members across the country vote for Gangbuk in the third primary? I have no explanation as to whether we should participate in the vote, why Park Yong-jin still has to run with a 55% lead, which is not even a 30% reduction in production, and why the party ignores the raising of issues as if there is no problem despite nationwide voting delays. “I mightn’t even hear it and mightn’t understand it,” he said.

Rep. Park said, “I hope that the traces of my struggle over the past month will serve as a warning to things that should never happen once more in our political history,” and “I hope that this process will become an important touchstone for our politics and the Democratic Party to become more democratic and rational.” He said.

Director Cho, who won the primary on this day, worked as an aide to former Unified Progressive Party lawmaker Lee Jeong-hee from 2010 to 2012. He has served as director of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation since 2020. Until recently, he hosted the YouTube broadcast ‘Alill Leo’ with former Roh Moo-hyun Foundation Chairman Yoo Si-min.
