Yesterday, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, which provides the features required for flagship phones, but at a more affordable price than Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 uses a 4nm process and is equipped with a 3.0GHz Cortex-X4 main core, four 2.8GHz performance cores and three 2.0GHz energy-saving cores.
Different configuration from SD8G3
Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is not a simple downclocked version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It uses a lower-clocked Cortex-X4 core and is equipped with 4 large cores and 3 small cores in a 1+4+3 configuration. It is not the 1+5+2 configuration of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The memory is closer to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, supporting up to 24GB LPDDR5x RAM (up to 4,200MHz) and UFS 4.0 storage. In terms of connectivity, it supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB-C.
5G Modem is older
The modem used in Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is also the older Snapdragon X70 5G instead of X75, but Qualcomm emphasizes that the new processor has 3GPP Release 17 and 5G power saving functions, which are not available in Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This processor is also new. Wi-Fi 7 standard ready. Audio supports 15-bit 44.1kHz lossless wireless streaming and Auracast.
Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has the following features:
Generative AI: Can run the most popular generative AI models, such as Llama 2, Baichuan-7B and Gemini Nano, supporting models with up to 10 billion parameters.
Flagship camera experience: Equipped with triple 18-bit ISPs that work together with the Hexagon NPU for image processing. It supports the “Always-sensing camera” function, which can speed up face unlocking and QR code scanning. The ISP+NPU combination can also improve image shooting quality in dim environments and can even perform epitaxial processing.
Top gaming performance: Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is equipped with a powerful Adreno GPU that supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing. It also comes with features such as Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 and Snapdragon Game Super Resolution to improve gaming performance.
Display and audio: The processor can drive a QHD+ screen with a high refresh rate of 144Hz, or a 4K screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz, and supports H.265 and AV1 video decoding and HDR playback.
Release time and price
Several major smartphone manufacturers, including Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Realme and Xiaomi, have confirmed that they will use Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and are expected to release new phones using this processor in the next few months. Some foreign media believe that Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will appear in some “flagship killer” mobile phones, but many flagships currently use Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Although the price positioning is different, this new processor may still steal the latter’s market.
