Eugenio Derbez unleashes MEMES after confessing that he could run for the Presidency

Eugenio Derbez went from doing comedy shows on Televisa forums, to acting alongside Adam Sandler, and rubbing shoulders with the cream of Hollywood during the Oscars in 2022, where he attended for his outstanding performance in CODA. The success he has had as a dramatic actor and as a producer has meant that, ironically, the comedian is taken seriously every time he accepts a new project. That is why a recent interview given to El País, in which he revealed that he was able to appear on the June 2 election ballots, has shaken social networks.

Regarding his most recent feature film, Radical, Derbez spoke regarding the project based on the story of the girl genius Paloma Noyola Bueno and the teacher who promoted her talent, Sergio Iván Juárez Correa.

The talk, which pointed in several directions, touched on a controversy that has followed Derbez in recent years: his ideological differences with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) over the construction of the Mayan Train, the flagship project of the Tabasco administration.

In recent days, AMLO revealed that his political adversaries saw in the actor a strong profile to compete for the Presidency in the June 2 elections, a version that was confirmed by Derbez:

“I had a confrontation with the president over the Mayan Train. As a result of I began this fight to defend the Riviera Maya and the cenotes, I began to acquire political visibility, to the point that they did a survey (in 2022) in the Reforma newspaper and I came out in fourth place without having done anything, without being political and without saying that he wanted to be a candidate.

They contacted me to ask if I was interested and I took it very seriously. At this stage of my life I have everything I need and I asked myself how no one had come to power to say: “I already have everything, I don’t have to steal to live,” he indicated.

Derbez was referring to the attention he received when participating in the “Sélvame del Tren” campaign, a project that sought to cling to a legal framework to stop the railway route, and which was joined by several celebrities such as actresses Kate del Castillo and Ana Claudia Talancón , and singers of the stature of Natalia Lafourcade and Rubén Albarrán, from Café Tacvba. However, Derbez was the most distinctive face of the project that publicly challenged AMLO’s project.

His recent confession made headlines in the media and divided comments on social networks, where the possibility that Eugenio Derbez appeared on the ballot generated memes and criticism of political parties, who were accused of prioritizing popularity over preparation when determining their applicants for public office.
