Due to these changes linked to pregnancy weakening the gums and teethpregnant women are thus more exposed than the general population to oral pathologies such as dental erosion, caries or periodontal disease (pregnancy gingivitis, periodontitis). Furthermore, obstetric complications can also occur.

During pregnancy, the prevention of oral and dental pathologies is based on essential hygienic and dietary rules: good oral hygiene (at least 2 daily brushings), a balanced diet, regular physical activity, the absence of consumption risky substances such as tobacco or alcohol. If you experience morning sickness or frequent vomiting, you should rinse your mouth immediately with water and brush your teeth away from vomiting.

This maternity oral prevention examination is carried out by a dental surgeon. During this examination, the practitioner takes stock of the pregnant woman’s oral health, screens for possible oral pathologies, prevents the patient’s possible pregnancy complications and reminds her or teaches her oral hygiene techniques. -basic dental.

During the period of pregnancy and excluding emergency situations, the preferred time to perform oral care is defined as the 2nd trimester of pregnancy, then the first half of the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. As a matter of principle, pregnant women should therefore avoid dental care during the first trimester and during the period preceding childbirth.

Until now, the preventive oral and dental maternity examination was covered by Health Insurance from the 4th month of pregnancy until the twelfth day following delivery.
