Algeria-Morocco Real Estate Dispute: Unfounded Accusations and Escalation

A Moroccan diplomatic source told Agence France-Presse on Monday that Algeria’s accusations once morest Rabat of “robbing” its properties in Morocco are “unfounded” and fall within the scope of “an unjustified spirit of escalation.”

This came the day following the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced “provocations” and a “comprehensive robbery” of property belonging to its embassy in Rabat, following reports of the matter appeared in the media.

However, a Moroccan diplomatic source considered that the Algerian response was “baseless, contains several false allegations, and falls within the context of an unjustified escalatory spirit.”

He explained, preferring not to mention his name, that the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted to the Algerian authorities in 2022 a request to purchase a building belonging to it adjacent to the Ministry’s headquarters, on the basis that it had remained vacant since the change of the headquarters of the Algerian Embassy in Rabat, as part of a project to expand the Ministry’s offices.

He added, “Morocco planned this project in full transparency and in constant communication with the Algerian authorities,” noting that they “responded” to the Moroccan request, but the process is “currently frozen, because Morocco is not acting according to the logic of escalation.”

He stressed that the matter is not related to the headquarters of the Algerian embassy or the residence of the ambassador, noting that the Moroccan Foreign Ministry has taken similar measures with other foreign diplomatic headquarters to expand its headquarters.

Between “interest” and “provocation”.. What are the backgrounds of the Algerian-Moroccan dispute over real estate?

Amid an unprecedented diplomatic crisis between the two neighboring countries, Algeria issued a strongly worded statement on Sunday in response to the Moroccan authorities initiating measures to confiscate property belonging to its embassy in Rabat.

The relations of the two countries have witnessed an ongoing diplomatic crisis since Algeria severed its relations with Rabat in the summer of 2021, accusing the latter of committing “hostile acts” once morest it, in the context of the dispute between the two countries over Western Sahara and Morocco’s normalization of its relations with Israel in exchange for the United States’ recognition of its sovereignty over this disputed territory.

Morocco expressed its regret over the Algerian decision and rejected its “false justifications.”
