“The wife of Zakythos” …comes to Athens with Katerina Gatzoia 2024-03-18 15:11:39

It is a stirring monologue that is catalysed by the actress Katerina Gajoia, who completely identifies with the character, embodies the speech, becomes a true priestess of Solomon’s text and its multiple meanings, who shares them with the audience.

The work was written on the occasion of the feeling of fear and cowardice that overwhelmed Solomon, when he saw a deformed, passionate Woman of the island, furiously insulting the women who have come from the besieged Messolonghi, asking for help for the prisoners.

The fact that he might not defend these Mesolongites on the spot caused the Poet to feel guilty and became the reason for wanting to understand the power of this Woman, considering her the embodiment of “Evil”.

Poetic License “borrows” the mask of Saint Dionysius the Hieromonk – a historical person who lived 172 years – to fearlessly look at “Evil”.

Looking with the eyes of a Saint, Solomon frees his spirit, and watching the last dramatic moments of the Woman, he humbly prays for her.

He understands that the Woman, who was feared as an entity of “Evil”, had no power, but lived in agony and confusion.

He realizes that he himself became the bearer of Evil, because his mind was occupied by the terrifying voices of the unhappy Woman, and he lost his freedom of will.

We must not allow our Spirit to be enslaved to our fearful and unstable emotions, Solomon seems to be implying, but trust to the steadfast truth that dwells in our consciousness, that we may resist any fear as opposed to freedom.

THEY WROTE FOR THE SHOW

“D. Abdeliodis condensed all the faces into a single one, demonic and angelic, giving him tremendous intensity, power and momentum. In a frontal teaching, face to face, like a study in red, of a great post-Byzantine craftsman. With embodied, revelatory speech, dominated by Katerina Gajoia’s exquisite and meaningful interpretation.”

Leandros Polenakis, theater critic Doctor of Pantei University

“The contribution of the Municipality of Avdeliodi to the theater is enormous. With his work, this also becomes extremely topical. Actress Katerina Gajoya is sensational. If “an actor means light”, as Hadjidakis assured us, an actor means light, and if an actress also means a voice, Gatjoya has both” under the guidance of Abdeliodis.”

Nikitas Chiotinis, Professor at the University of Architecture – Philosophy

“The deep theological, metaphysical plexus is mysteriously woven by the director, Dimos Abdeliodis, who, with his simple, but imposing elements, transports us to the center of the story. Katerina Gajoia succeeds, as a priestess on stage, in conveying the spirit of the Woman of Zakythos and in purifying the mind from the abyss of mental suffering. Because only Light purifies the soul.”

Chrysa Nikolaki, Theater and Literature Critic
