Buda Bridge Repair Update: Expected to Reopen in June 2023

The Buda bridge should be returned to service and fully operational from the first week of June, the Port of Brussels announced on Monday. The repair work on the bridge, damaged in December 2022 by a collision with a barge, “is soon coming to an end”, rejoiced the port administration.

After an in-depth renovation of the bridge deck in the warehouses of the Hye company, charged by the Port of Brussels with the repair work, the structure is now being repainted. As soon as this operation is completed, the finishing work can begin. The return of the deck to Brussels, by water, is planned for the end of May.

The Port of Brussels chose, following the collision, to identically renovate the bridge deck, “emblematic industrial heritage of the Port of Brussels”. This work notably required the use of metal construction techniques that are no longer used today.

Nearly 3,000 rivets were replaced using techniques from the 1950s, and the covering of the cycle part of the bridge was improved with the installation of a resin, “more suitable and safer for cyclists”, specified the Port of Brussels. At the same time, the bridge machinery was inspected and renovated to allow it to return to service as quickly as possible once the bridge deck was put back in place.

Located at the northern entrance to the Port of Brussels, the Buda bridge was hit by a boat in December 2022, making it impossible for it to operate. Property of the Port of Brussels inaugurated in 1955, this lift bridge allows – in normal times – accessibility to the maritime outer port 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
