Mayor of the capital
Written by Christina Vontin
On the anniversary of the 1848 revolution, Gergely Karácsony declared the capital a “republic governed by citizens of Budapest”.
At the demonstration together with student organizations, the mayor of Budapest promised that the capital would “give refuge to the concept of the republic.” In his speech, Karácsony further said that the government is abandoning poor people, homeless people, but also teachers and students in their hopeless situation. The government runs the country like a corporation and not like a republic.
The Párbeszéd politician called on all Budapest residents to go to the polls on June 9th. Many people are dissatisfied not only with the government, but also with the opposition. However, the local elections were not regarding parties, but regarding local communities. “The people of Budapest have an easy time making their choice, because the Orbán government knows nothing other than declarations of war for the capital.” The values on the negation of which government policy is based are present in this city.
If he regains the trust of voters, Karácsony promised that he would continue his policies that focus on improving the quality of life in the city. Healthy streets, healthy living space and healthy air are the most important goals of his policy.
