Kinshasa, March 18, 2024 – Cardinal Ambongo does not agree with the lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty by the Congolese authorities. Speaking on this case during a program on the Catholic channel Kto, he maintained that the reinstatement of this sentence is a step backwards.
For him, a government worthy of the name and responsible cannot go in this direction to, he says, sanction people it would describe as traitors.
Hence his fear that this measure is a means for the government to settle scores, especially with its political adversaries. For him, if this measure were to apply, it should be directed towards those in power.
“I would not like us to take advantage of a vague notion of traitors to settle scores on the political level. We must first agree on what the notion of traitor means. When I look at the reality at home in the Congo, but the great traitors to the homeland are precisely those who are in power. Since they do not serve the interest of the people, they are the ones who must be considered traitors. Because they do not assume the role for which they received the responsibilities, service to the population”he explained.
It was in 2003 that the DRC decided to change the death penalty to capital punishment.
