STRENGTHENING digital financial literacy and avoiding debt are a number of tips that can be done to avoid the trap of online gambling, said cyber culture observer Zahid Asmara.

“In order to avoid the negative impact of developments in digital technology, including the emergence of online gambling, people need to recognize digital financial literacy,” said Zahid as reported by BetweenSunday (17/3).

Digital financial literacy is insight into financial service activities or payment methods that utilize digital technology.

Zahid assesses that by strengthening digital financial literacy, a person can better understand how to use financial services online, including knowing the dangers of online gambling.

Apart from strengthening digital financial literacy, other tips that can be done to avoid being trapped by online gambling are limiting access to digital platforms, changing the consumer perspective to investment, getting used to cash transactions and staying away from debt.

Princeton Bridge Year On-Site Director Indonesia Sani Widowati explained that referring to Drone Emprit data, Indonesia is the country with the most online gambling players in the world, numbering 201,122 people.

Various forms of online gambling include card game slot machines, dice game slots, sports betting, and job vacancies.

According to Sani, the games on various online gambling sites are designed in such a way that they have a strong psychological impact by stimulating the cognitive functions of the players’ brains.

The design of gambling games resembles online games in general, such as attractive visual displays, audio effects, even vibration effects, for example when a player wins big, thus having a direct impact on the individual’s cognition.

“This effect encourages the hypothalamus in the brain to produce the hormone dopamine which triggers a feeling of pleasure so that we continue to look for that feeling of joy once more and once more,” said Sani.

Sani believes that, even though they understand the risks, most people still play online gambling and end up getting caught because they are triggered by curiosity, an influencing environment and poor conditions.

“Those who are already caught up in online gambling end up experiencing repeated losses such as loss of material things and mounting debts, loss of loved ones and loss of self-control,” he said. (Z-6)
