Silje Opseth: With a bloody nose to the world record in ski flying

Bloody nose and tears for distance hunter Silje Opseth: The first ski flying in the history of the women’s World Cup left a lot of emotional and physical marks. At the center of the action was the Norwegian Opseth, who fell headfirst following 236.5 meters in the test round and was then badly scarred. “She looked like a boxer following a fight,” said German Katharina Schmid, formerly Althaus, describing her colleague on Sunday without any exaggeration. But the 24-year-old Opseth did not allow herself to be discouraged and later flew 230.5 meters in the final without falling – this time the women’s world record counted. “It means the world to me. That was my goal for the season, to deliver on a day like today,” said Opseth, who suffered abrasions on her nose and forehead. “I feel okay, I don’t have any serious injuries. It was a wild day,” said the Norwegian.

The fact that the Slovenian Nika Prevc completed her victory in the overall World Cup by finishing eleventh on the day and the Norwegian Eirin Maria Kvandal was named the overall winner of the Raw Air Tour almost became a minor matter in view of the emotional spectacle on the huge ski flying facility in Vikersund. Kvandal won with 202 and 212 meters, largely thanks to a shortening of three hatches in the final, ahead of world record holder Opseth.

Of the three Austrians in the field of only 17 athletes, none cracked the 200 meter mark: the best ÖSV jumper was Jacqueline Seifriedsberger (191.5/180.5), who took seventh place. Eva Pinkelnig (194/180) came in ninth, Lisa Eder (174/173) came in twelfth. There was some discussion regarding the fact that, in contrast to the men’s competition, the competition that was canceled on Saturday was not held on Sunday, which would have been technically possible.
