The UN notes the need for efforts to rebuild the Gaza Strip in Palestine following the conflict ends. The world body estimates it will take decades to clear the rubble and rebuild the city destroyed by Israel.

“Humanitarian partners warn that it will take years to clean up nearly 23 million metric tons of debris generated by the destruction of residential units and other property in the Gaza Strip, and to clean up unexploded ordnance contamination,” said UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said mine action partners were conducting several assessments of the explosive threat and educating the public regarding the risks involved. However, countermeasures are hampered by restrictions on mine handling programs and the deployment of special mine personnel.

Israel launched an attack on Gaza on October 7, 2023. The attack has killed more than 30,800 victims and injured nearly 73 thousand others amid mass destruction and shortages of basic necessities.

Israel also implemented a crippling blockade of the Palestinian enclave, leaving its population, especially residents of northern Gaza, on the brink of starvation.

Some 85% of Gaza’s residents have been forced to flee due to Israeli attacks amid shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the infrastructure in the enclave has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim decree in January ordered Tel Aviv to halt genocidal acts and take action to ensure that humanitarian aid is provided to civilians in Gaza. (Anadolu/Z-11)
