Cuba’s private sector is the protagonist of recent imports from the United States, especially chicken meat. In fact, last January a total of 30,678 tons arrived from American ports.
This figure meant an increase of 3 thousand tons more than last December (27,072) and approximately double what was recorded in November (16,648). A slight decrease in prices has greatly influenced the growth of imports of this food.
In this case of chicken meat, the price per kilogram fell from December to January. The value moved from $1.26 USD to $1.11 USD, hence the purchase expense is lower. At the beginning of this year, $34.21 million dollars were invested compared to $34.19 at the end of 2023.
January: sixth highest historical value
January was, without a doubt, the sixth highest historical value since 2022, whose record was reached in August of that year. That month, Cuba imported 35,117 tons of chicken meat from the United States. The figure is higher than the previous peaks of July 2019 (34 thousand tons) and March 2021 (32 thousand 700).
The data offered by the United States Department of Agriculture includes all contracted chicken meat exports to Cuba. This means that agreements with state and private clients are added, MSMEs in the latter case.
The breast is the most coveted piece of chicken in Cuba and its price exceeds $1000.00 CUP. Meanwhile, the updated and exact number of chicken that the Island needs each month to guarantee its regulated distribution is unknown. However, on other occasions it was specified that, on average, 5,300 tons are required for a province.
This chicken meat itself accounts for the majority of total imports from the United States. Mainly frozen hindquarters, frozen meat, offal and frozen thighs arrive in the country.
