The leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, officials of the European Commission and the Special Coordination Service of the Recovery Fund carried out an inspection of the under-upgrading High Voltage Center (HVT) of Koumoundourou in Aspropyrgos, Attica.
The President and CEO of ADMIE Manos Manousakis and the Vice-President and General Manager of Technology, System Development and Strategy Ioannis Margaris welcomed the Minister of Environment and Energy Theodore Skylakakis, the Director of the EU Special Group for Recovery and Resilience (RECOVER) Johannes Luebking and echelon of the Special Coordination Service of the Recovery Fund led by Commander Orestis Kavalakis.
This was followed by a tour by the Director of New Transport Projects of ADMIE Michalis Hatzipanos, during which the significant progress that has been made in the construction of the project was noted. In particular, in February 2024 the 400 kV side of the KYT was completed, which is one of the most important accompanying projects of the Crete-Attica electrical interconnection, while the 150 kV side is also expected to be completed by October 2024.
The new Corinth – Attica Ultra High Voltage Line will end in this modern infrastructure, a project currently under construction, also co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, which will offer greater energy security in the Peloponnese.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thodoros Skylakakis, said: “The major project of upgrading the Koumoundouro High Voltage Center is crucial for our electrical system. It is being implemented – almost finished – with resources from the Recovery and Resilience Fund “Greece 2.0”, with the help of the European Union.
This is a critical project for both the interconnection of the Peloponnese and the interconnection of Crete, as well as for the stability of the electrical system. It is a project that is a generation ahead of anything else that has been built, in terms of stations for high voltage current, which allows us to have security in our electrical system, with small losses.
At the same time, it creates the conditions so that we can integrate Renewable Energy Sources as quickly as possible into our electricity system, with the aim of the necessary transition towards a greener, safer and more cost-effective future”.
The Governor of the Recovery Fund, Orestis Kavalakis, said: “Today we had the opportunity to meet with the officials of the European Commission in the project of upgrading the Ultra High Voltage Center of Koumoundouros implemented by ADMIE. The project is a key infrastructure for the energy transmission system and contributes decisively to the capacity and stability of the country’s electricity network from Attica to Crete.
We are now in the implementation phase of the Recovery Fund projects and this is a critical and necessary intervention for the further penetration of RES which is a priority of the Fund”.
The President and CEO of ADMIE, Manos Manousakis, said: “Today we presented to the officials of the European Commission and the Minister of Environment and Energy one of the most critical projects of the country’s electricity system, which connects Attica with the Peloponnese, it will play a big role important role in the interconnection of Attica with Crete and will make the system of Central Greece more stable as a whole.
It is a “green” infrastructure, which requires much less space compared to the existing facilities and will upgrade the safety and stability of the Greek electricity transmission system, in order to proceed in a timely manner with the energy transition”.
The project is co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund “Greece 2.0” with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
