Harambee~Ubuntu Pan-African and Feminist Philanthropies: A Name for African Giving and Solidarity

2024-03-16 12:41:46

We are proud to announce a significant development of the pan-African and feminist philanthropies initiative, which emanates from our recent in-depth and concerted strategy meeting in Kenya, March 1-2, 2024

An African name for philanthropy

We have always aspired to have an African name that reclaims the internationalist and intersectional agendas of Pan-Africanism and feminism in philanthropy. After careful consideration, we have named our Pan-African and Feminist Philanthropy initiative “Harambee~Ubuntu Pan-African and Feminist Philanthropies.”

“Harambee” means to gather, collaborate and work collectively towards the achievement of a common goal, while “Ubuntu” represents the philosophy of interdependence, unity and common humanity. This name change affirms the rich history of African giving – rooted in solidarity, mutuality and collective humanity – which has been ignored and silenced internationally.

As we focus on capacity building approaches and transformative partnership strategies, we have strengthened our collaboration by adopting a vibrant and recognizable logo that positions this work beyond the African continent.

We continue to envision an ecosystem of philanthropies anchored in Pan-African and feminist values and principles, with common infrastructure and mechanisms that connect and strengthen social movements, activists and communities by moving money and other resources in their efforts to promote justice and equity.

Harambee~Ubuntu, Pan-African and Feminist Philanthropies, is the result of a deep partnership between Urgent Action Fund–Africa, a Pan-African and Feminist Rapid Response Fund, committed to

transforming power relations by providing resources to African feminists, women’s human rights defenders and their training, and TrustAfrica, a pan-African foundation that seeks to strengthen African agencies and initiatives that tackle pressing challenges that the continent faces.

We are excited regarding the possibilities offered by Harambee~Ubuntu and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts.
